Schizophrenia is a clinical condition of variable but profoundly disruptive, psycho-physiological disturbance that involves impairment of cognition, perception, emotion and other aspects of behaviour. The manifestation of this illness varies among patients and overtime but the effect of the illness is usually severe and long-lasting.
The major manifestations are in the form of hallucinations, delusion, behavioural oddity that meet Eugene Blueler first rank symptoms.
The causes are largely unknown but many etiological factors have been identified including, but not limited to, genetics, the use of psychoactive substances like Cannabis, life events, family disruption among others. All the causal - related factors are grouped into predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors.
Treatment could last for between 4 weeks to 6 weeks before the patient returns to his normal personality state.
