Person completing the CAGE alcohol questionnaire, AUDIT-C test, CRAFFT, and TICS, on a tablet

Scoring & Interpretation (AUDIT-C)

Total score = sum of item scores (0–12).

  • 0: Abstinent or very low risk.
  • 1–3: Lower risk — offer brief advice when appropriate.
  • 4–5: Possible hazardous drinking — consider brief intervention (men: common cutoff ≥4).
  • 6–7: Pattern consistent with harmful drinking.
  • 8–12: High likelihood of alcohol dependence — recommend full assessment.

Note: Many services use men ≥4 and women ≥3 as clinical cutoffs. Use local guidance and clinician judgment.

AUDIT-C Questions

1. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?
2. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?
3. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?

Audit-C Screening Test

AUDIT-C provides a brief, validated screen for risky alcohol use. This tool has become a significant instrument for effective drug rehab program. Complete three items about drinking frequency, typical quantity, and periods of excessive indulgence. The test score highlights people who need further assessment.

How To Complete Test

First, answer each question for the usual pattern over the past 12 months (or your clinic’s period). This tool screens; it does not diagnose. Next, score each item from 0 to 4. Then total the three scores to get a value from 0 to 12. Finally, compare the total to the cutoff guidance below.

Safety, Limits, & Next Steps

AUDIT-C screens risk, not diagnosis. If results show harmful use, schedule a comprehensive assessment. Also, if a person shows signs of severe intoxication, withdrawal, or self-harm, call emergency services immediately.

Who should use AUDIT-C

  • Adults: Use the test for routine screening in primary care and specialist clinics.
  • Clinicians: Use the test to triage, document risk, and decide when to deliver brief interventions or referrals.
  • Programs: Use the test to monitor population-level drinking patterns quickly.
